Sea Transport receives Approval in Principle for hybrid nuclear-diesel vessel design

Sea Transport is pleased to announce that Approval in Principle (AiP) has been granted by Lloyd’s Register for its hybrid nuclear-diesel vessel concept.

Recently reported by World Nuclear News, the approval recognises the technical viability of integrating advanced nuclear power capability alongside conventional diesel-electric propulsion within Sea Transport’s proven stern landing vessel (SLV) platform.

The AiP confirms that the hybrid nuclear-diesel design concept has been independently reviewed against safety and regulatory considerations at a preliminary level — a significant step in structured, research-led development.

Combining proven platforms with future energy systems

The concept builds on Sea Transport’s 25+ years of experience designing amphibious SLVs operating in demanding environments. By incorporating a hybrid nuclear-diesel configuration, the vessel design explores how extended endurance, reduced fuel reliance, and increased operational resilience could be achieved in future applications.

Importantly, Approval in Principle does not represent construction approval or deployment — rather, it validates the design framework and demonstrates that the integration of advanced energy systems within an established vessel platform is technically feasible from a classification perspective.

“Achieving Approval in Principle for hybrid nuclear power is an exciting step for LR and the wider maritime industry,” said Jez Sims, Technical Authority for Nuclear, Lloyd’s Register. “We are proud to provide independent technical assurance, drawing on decades of expertise in regulatory compliance, vessel design and nuclear safety. Our role is to help the industry move forward with confidence — turning pioneering ideas into safe, practical solutions.”

Stuart Ballantyne, CEO SeaTransport, said: “This AiP marks a pivotal moment for amphibious vessel design. By working closely with LR, we’ve integrated nuclear MMR capability into our proven SLV platform, future-proofing it for extended endurance, operational flexibility and low-emission performance. We do believe that for all shipowners, this is a paradigm shift in marine technology greater than sail to steam.”
